About the Lake

Discover the story behind Crabtree Fisheries and learn what makes our lake the premier destination for serious carp anglers seeking that fish of a lifetime.

A Secluded Estate Lake

A secluded old estate lake that lies deep in the heart of the Shropshire countryside. Hidden in a wooded valley near Wenlock Edge, the lake's construction dates back to the 18th Century.

The lake was re-excavated and remodelled in the late 1980s, after which it became a Private Syndicate. Having been left to wild over for the past 10 years, the lake has now had a complete restocking, and has become a prime and very mature water that is steeped in wildlife, fauna and complimented by beautiful surroundings.

The lake is a traditional natural venue has shallows and depths of up to 10 feet and has features including weed beds, lilly pads, rushes, as well as various underwater features such as silt, gravel, underwater streams, slopes and deep holes. It is not a typical commercial fishery and as such requires plenty of knowledge, water craft and experience. The lake is full of natural food and blood worm beds so tactics are key.

It is stocked with approximately 100 pristine fish ranging from newly stocked Scaly Mirrors to large Unscaled Mirrors, Zip Linear and a few beautiful Old English Common Carp. Our current stock range up to the 30lbs, which will continue to grow and be added to over the coming years.

Crabtree Fisheries Lake Overview

Lake History

From 18th Century origins to becoming a premier carp fishing destination in the Shropshire countryside.

1987

The Purchase

The Pool was purchased by Alan Russell in 1987, fulfilling a childhood dream. The pool was surrounded by sedges and was only a decade or so away from being reclaimed by nature and reverting to bogland.

1988

Renovation Begins

The pool was drained and de-silted, with the edges being re-defined and the establishment of proper banks. Including the construction of the Island.

1990

First Visitors

By the early 1990s the pool had been fully renovated and the boathouse constructed. This would have been around the time visitors first fished the lake.

2019

De-silting

In Spring 2019 the lake was drained. Peter Wilde of Wildes, Shrewsbury did an absolutely fantastic job of de-silting the inlet end of the pool, hauling 100s of tonnes of sediment from the bed and re-defining the banks.

2019-2023

Re-stocking

The lake was re-stocked in late 2019 and again in 2023 with Scaly Mirror, Mirror, Zip Linear and Common Carp to 22lb+. After an intensive feeding program our stock is now into the 28lb+ range.

2023+

Ongoing Improvements

We have fully fenced the pool to protect from unwanted predators (which is proving successful so far), and continue to work hard redefining the paths and pegs as needed.

Stalkers Walk

The pathway along the Northern Bank of the lake, fondly referred to as stalkers walk. There are a number of old pegs and holes all along the bank towards the back of the island. Often the fish like to gather in the shallows and lily pads - perfect for some summer stalking.
